5 Criteria For A Green Building

5 Criteria For A Green Building

5 Criteria For A Green Building

A beautiful home is a dream of each living being. Human minds have developed a lot of technologies for a pretty and cozy home. The home was initially engineered to safeguard humans from rain, heat and wind. Eventually, with the rise in demand of human wants we tend to build additional advanced and technically improved houses.

With the increase in demand of construction materials the need of building green building is increasing today. A building can be considered green building when it is energy efficient, ecofriendly, comfortable and built with natural materials (desirable if offered regionally).

There are several criteria globally for a building to be labeled green. There are 5 basic criteria a building should follow to be considered green.

1. Usage of locally available materials.

Technologies and methods which are locally available should be considered first. Instead of adopting advanced international trends we can go for regionally available materials for the construction process. Recruiting native people and constructors will facilitate during this method.

2. Reducing the dependence in high energy products, systems and processes.

Less energy needed to build a building more ecofriendly will be it. Reusing of materials and products that are totaly capable of utilizing in new construction ought to be adopted. Rather than importing new advanced products some technologies which were used locally may be utilized to scale back the development value. All attainable waste generated from the construction side ought to be be reusable or recyclable.

3. A house should be well managed using minimum resources.

A green house uses minimum energy. It uses resources produced locally. Such as use of solar energy. Using solar energy in replace of typical electricity resources. This is attainable by generating own electricity by using solar panels at home. Using of water harvesting practices at home reduces the dependence on water resources during construction process as well as day to day purposes. Storing and using it during construction process can cut back the demand of energy value. Rain water harvesting is extremely useful in water scarce areas. Those who are building new houses at those water scarce areas must adopt water harvesting techniques.

4. Managing of waste is a most vital matter to deal in every household.

We generate a lot of waste at home, mostly in the kitchen. Segregation of waste and disposing them in correct way is a real deal. Wastes which can be recycled and reused should be stored accordingly. For those who have flower garden and kitchen garden the organic waste generated in kitchen act as a best natural fertilizer. However, a house which generates minimum waste is considered green.

5. A house can be considered green if it can produce most of its requirements onsite.

Like managing a kitchen garden, producing vegetables which we consume at home are healthy and chemical free. At home we can always opt for organic garden for a healthy living. A house which produces its own food resource is considered sustainable well managed.

Apart from all the above requirements a house must be well-ventilated so that air and sunlight can enter the home. Sunlight entering houses are germ free and wind flow takes away fowl smell aloof from house. A well-ventilated house is additional vital for maintaining proper temperature for a comfortable house.

Many people have a  hobby to own flower garden reception. Planting trees, medicinal plants and flower plants will add up to the natural beauty of a house. It is necessary for a house to have a well balanced surrounding with the environment.

But today we are going to talk about some products which are available at home and can be used for cleaning purposes. All we have to buy organic products and use them in place of chemical lead products. We can make some homemade cleaning products by ourself with the ingredients available at home.

Some things available at home are useful in cleaning are:

1.      Vinegar

Organic vinegar is easily available at stores and many household have them at home.  It’s a versatile cleaner and a wonderful disinfectant. Vinegar is a wonderful glass and window cleaner. It is most effective in cleaning moulds, bacteria as it is acidic. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a most preferred type of vinegar it may have same properties as white vinegar but smells good.

Make a solution of equal parts of water and vinegar and store in a spray bottle. It can replace any of your toxic glass cleaners at home. It gives shine to glass surfaces like window panels, mirror and tv screens.

Application of vinegar containing products should be avoided for marble and granite structures as the vinegar is acidic.

2.      Baking soda

Baking soda is a non-toxic deodorizer that mixed with water can clean up dirt and grease easily. Baking soda is best for cleaning stains in sink. We just need to sprinkle some baking soda in the sink and rub it with any scrubber sponge.

For cleaning dust and grease we can prepare a solution of 4tbsp baking soda and 1qt of warm water. For more tough stains we can use white vinegar with baking soda. The mixture of white vinegar and baking soda should be used right away because it releases gas when stored and can get exploded.

3.      Lemon

Lemon has antibacterial properties which cleanse bacteria and germs and leaves a fresh scent.

For all purpose cleaning we can prepare a solution of 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup distilled water, juice from half a lemon and 2 to 15 drops of essential oil.  This solution can be used for multipurpose cleaning (except in granite and marble). The solution must be stored in refrigerator due to the lemon juice.

4.      Rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol has antiseptic properties and so is essential in cleaning germs.

Prepare a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) 1/4th cup, 2 cup distilled water, half cup white vinegar or ACV mixed with some drops of essential oil. This solution is very effective in cleaning glass.

5.      Soap nuts

Soap nuts are berries also known as reetha. Soap nuts are best replacements for soap and detergent. They are natural and chemical free. It can be used as dish soap, laundry, body wash and shampoo.

For preparing a soap nut solution we need 3 soap nuts per cup of water. Boil the berries in water and smash the berries once it is boiled using smasher. Once it is cooled down store it in a container.Buy it here

6.      Salt

Besides using in food, salt can be used as a natural cleaner for getting rid of stains in steel utensils. Just take a little amount of salt and rub it with a slice of lemon. It is effective in getting rid of rust stains.

Blood stains and wine stains can also be reduced by application of little amount of salt in the stains. We can apply salt directly to the stain and let it stay in water for few hours for better results.

Organic Product vs Natural Product

Organic Product vs Natural Product

Organic Product vs Natural Product

Nowadays everything is about being greener, being more natural, and using more organic ingredients and products. Greener products are safe for our bodies and safe for the environment. However, when it comes to being natural or organic, most people do not know the difference.

Natural and organic products have become more and more common in grocery stores over the past few decades. Most people thought of the same as natural and organic, used each other on product labels. Till recently, no one thought any differently. However, there is a huge difference between natural and organic products and consumers are being misled to believe otherwise.

Let's have a look at how natural and organic products are different

Food labeling:

Product labels advertising natural, all-natural, 100% natural or certain natural products are not necessarily correct. Even though a product contains only one ingredient that is natural, the label may state that it is "all-natural" and there is nothing that can stop it. Instead of reading labels to confirm those ingredients, we look at a "natural" label and consider that the product is healthy and safe. This is not always the case.
Organic products, on the other hand, are regulated by strict rules by the Government and ensure that botanical products are grown in a chemical-free environment. Standards have strict rules and quality that must be maintained for a product to earn a certified organic seal. Each organic product must be 95–100% organic to be certified.

By reading the label we can make a better decision whether a product is natural, healthy or safe. Some ingredients that are not natural include lead, mercury, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulfate. If you see these ingredients on a label and they are claiming to be a natural switch to a different brand.

Artificial preservatives:

Organic products do not contain artificial preservatives. However, as mentioned earlier products labeled as natural may contain a single natural substance and many chemical preservatives yet can be labeled as natural products. In the case of edibles, it is very dangerous as in our everyday life we consume lot of food, juices and snacks we eat them thinking they are healthy but we are feeding poison to ourselves which in turn worsens our immune system and risks the cause of many diseases.

Artificial flavors:

Artificial flavors are made from combining inedible ingredients and do smell as the natural ones. They are made to taste as the natural ones. Manufacturers do not hesitate in doing more experiments in bringing up new products with the same natural taste and we are often fooled by the labels in it.
Like artificial preservatives artificial flavors are of no good to our health yet we are tempted by the smell and taste of the product.

Artificial pesticides:

The natural product that is used in natural labeled products can be from a organic or inorganic farm. Inorganic farm uses a lot of artificial pesticides to protect the plant. The  pesticides are the reason of many abnormal health problems in human body.
The organic products are 100%  chemical pesticide free and natural products may have chemical pesticides. In this case also organic products are far better than the natural labelled products.

Artificial fertilizers:

Artificial fertilizers contain a lot of chemical products. As universally plants do need nutrition for its growth and development, in organic farms only organic fertilizers are used but in the natural labelled products the natural ingredient found may have artificial fertilizer grown in inorganic farm.

Cosmetics, household products, cleaning products, food and pet food are all areas that use both natural and organic labels. So now you know the difference between natural and organic products, so next time you go shopping you may like a smart and sensible product. Always remember to read the label before choosing which brand is right for you.

6 Ways to switch to Organic Habits

6 Ways to switch to Organic Habits

6 Ways to switch to Organic Habits

Organic Products are very important to be replaced by inorganic food products. Inorganic products contain a lot of chemicals that ultimately make our life unhealthy. The use of organic products will also help a lot in maintaining the natural balance between humans and the environment. The use of organic products should be encouraged. Using more organic products will gradually heal the environment which we have polluted a lot.

Nature has its definite tolerance capacity, the use of chemicals as pesticides and insecticides have caused many farm areas infertile. An organic way of living will have a positive impact on the environment. By changing some daily habits we can have a healthy way of life. The slow change of bad habits will be beneficial to ourselves.

We can switch to an organic way of life by changing certain options.

1. Clean Water:

Clean water is a basic human need. We all have water purifiers at home from different companies.

Some water purifiers even claim to have water with no chemicals, but a little amount of minor minerals present in water is necessary for us. While buying a new water purifier we should keep in mind that if we have more contaminated water the purifiers do not last. So we should always look for a purifier whose parts can be easily available. Purifiers are rarely labeled as organic but we should look for a purifier that provides clean water with easily available spare parts.

2. Food:

Selecting organic food products to consume may be tiring but once we start using them we will definitely like them eventually.

Stores that contain organic labeled products can be a better option to it. Some supermarkets and malls also label organic products such as fruits and vegetables. In small cities, we can easily get local organic food from fruit and vegetable vendors. In the case of selecting packaged products, it's easier to find because they are labeled very distinctly. Using organic edible oil for cooking will reduce the possibility of heart disease.

3. Cleaning products:

Cleaning products contain a lot of chemicals. They are also advertised as 99.99% effective in killing bacteria.

More effective a cleaning product claims more chemicals it contains. The chemicals in them are damaging to our immune system. We have a lot of cleaning products at home each for different purposes like cleaning floors, cleaning basins, cleaning window panels, cleaning of drawers, washing clothes and utensils, etc. we have a stack of them. However, we can switch to a single product for multipurpose cleaning.

 4. Bath products:

There are many herbal products in the market labeled as organic products.

Choosing an organic bath product is not so difficult as most of the organic products contain natural ingredients. Yet, we must be wise to choose the right product which is suitable for our skin. Some people may be sensitive to certain natural ingredients also, so before purchasing a bath product make sure you go through the ingredients list.

5. Skincare and Makeup Products:

Chemicals not only harm our skin but also snatch our glow from the skin.

We are certainly aware that a lot of makeup products are made from animal extracts so it's best to choose organic skincare cosmetics. There are also many online stores and brands which contain 100% organic products. So, my ladies spare a little more time to have more organic and natural skincare products.

6. Clothing:

Many popular brands are now manufacturing 100% organic clothes.

Mostly cotton clothes are organic. The best thing about organic clothing is that it is good to wash it by hand and with no warm water. Organic clothing is best for newborn babies and infants, so it's always safe to use them daily.

While using organic products there are fewer resources used so it causes less stress to nature. If we don’t start using organic products soon, our future generation may be devoid of many resources which we have exhausted. Turning to simple healthy habits will improve the quality of our life.
